One difference that I'm noticing is that compared to the last install I had, the menus in the 'prepare for your journey' section are in a different order and I have fewer points to spend than I did before. everything seems to be checking out okay so far, I have been able to embark (yay!). I figured the embark size shouldn't be a problem since other people posting in the threads i've read described trying to use 13x13 embarks or similar and reporting it working by going down 9x9. I have tried this on large and medium worlds, with an embark size of 4x4. I've had the task manager open while doing this and DF never seems to hit 1GB before freezing, never mind 2. I've read up on the issue a bit, and most of the time the problem seems to be DF hitting the 2GB ram cap and running out of space. It runs fine on my desktop, but any time I try to embark on my laptop, it will freeze and die.
